Fluglehorns
The flugel horn is a lonely instrument; the brass band has only one. It can
easily be mistaken for a Bb cornet, because of its appearance and position in
the band (next to the soprano cornet on the left side). It even plays in the
same range as the cornets. A careful inspection will reveal that the flugel
horn’s tubing diameter increases much more rapidly than a cornet’s, so that the
sound wave expands quickly as it travels from the mouthpiece to the bell. As
a result, the flugel horn has a dark tone quality that is an effective bridge
between the cornets and the still darker, lower pitched instruments, such as
the tenors.

MODEL 183 BACH FLUEGELHORN IN Bb
Widely used in jazz because of its rich, mellow lyrical timbre. The same pitch
and range as the Bb trumpet or cornet.
