Peer Mentorship

The Peer Mentorship Programme was pioneered by the BSM department
with the support of the Student Affairs Office for HDBIS and HDCAS
students in academic year 2002/03. This Programme aimed to provide
assistance to Year-1 students (Mentees) in terms of their academic
development and personal growth through their regular contacts with
the Year-2 and Year-3 students (Mentors). SAO offered an extensive
training to mentors so that they could acquire the coaching and
counseling skills.

The Programme had a special feature: it was our senior students,
not the graduates as in other mentorship programmes, to mentor our
juniors. The advantage was to reduce the possibilities of generation
gap and thus the mentor-mentee's friendship would be continued even
after graduation. In the ceremony, a certificate was also awarded to
those student-mentors who have completed the training courses
organized by SAO. Two of these trained student-mentors shared their
expectations, experience and feelings towards this Programme with
Year-1 students. The feedback from mentees were very positive as they
felt that the Programme would actually offer them the practical
assistance both personally and academically.
