Felix Wolfgang Magath made his Bundesliga debut for Hamburg SV in 1976, remaining loyal to the northern giants until calling time on his career a decade later after scoring 46 goals from midfield in 306 top flight appearances. After a period learning the ropes in the lower divisions, the father of six moved into Bundesliga coaching in 1995 and has stayed there ever since, initially with former club Hamburg and subsequently in Nuremberg, Bremen, Frankfurt and Stuttgart, where he earned his current enviable reputation. Magath took over VfB when the club was close to bankruptcy and languishing 17th in the standings, creating a team which made the last sixteen of the 2003-4 Champions League.
