HIGHER DIPLOMA IN COMPUTING STUDIES
Consistent with the College’s established mission, this Programme aims at providing a base in the practical and academic disciplines which are required of a computer professional in a business environment. Its objectives are, therefore, to provide an educational facility students to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills of problem-solving by means of information technology, to develop an ability to communicate with specialists and end-users and to cultivate a spirit of teamwork. This will enable the graduates from this Porgramme to start a career at entry level in the computer industry. In addition, the Programme aims to help students further their education in the computer or related fields and gain professional qualifications. The curriculum of this Programme covers core courses which are drawn from the major fields of Computer Science and Information Systems. It is supplemented by supporting courses of particular relevancy to the computer professional such as Communication in the Chinese and English languages, Mathematics as well as Business and Management. Students are enriched by the General Education courses, such as ethics, humanities, cultural and behavioural studies, which support the College’s ideal of a holistic outlook of life.
CAREER PROSPECTS
As the application of computer-based information systems proliferates in all sectors of our life, the demand for computing knowledge and skills is ever increasing and has yet to be satisfied. Graduates of this Programme are well equipped to contribute a useful role in programming, sales support, business systems analysis, end-user training and consulting in various functional areas including accounting, marketing, finance and human resources management, in such organizations as banks, insurance companies, governmental agencies and public utilities. Future career prospects for those who successfully complete this Programme are bright indeed.
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION
Recognition for part or full exemption from membership admission requirements is under discussion with the following professional bodies: The Hong Kong Computer Society, The British Computer Society and The Institute for Certification of Computer Professions [USA].
ACCREDITATION AND EXEMPTION
The Professional Diploma Programme in Computing Studies, which is the predecessor of the Higher Diploma and was offered by the College until the academic year 1997-98, has been accredited by a number of tertiary institutions in Australia, UK and the USA. On the basis of the institutional credit transfer arrangements, graduates of the Professional Diploma are eligible for admission to the corresponding on-campus Bachelor degree programmes within one or two years.
Locally, the Open University of Hong Kong accredited the Professional Diploma in Computing Studies and awarded block credits to its graduates towards completion of the University’s undergraduate degree in a related discipline of study.
TOP-UP DEGREE PROGRAMME
Graduates of this Programme are also provided with the opportunity to upgrade their Diploma to a Bachelor’s Degree through part-time study in Hong Kong. They can enroll in the Bachelor of Computing Programme offered by Deakin University, Australia, and can complete their studies within a minimum period of two years.
