HIGHER DIPLOMA IN TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION

The Higher Diploma in Translation and Interpretation Programme provides intensive studies and training in translation and interpretation from a bilingual perspective, enabling graduates to function as competent translators and interpreters in the workplace.  Upon completion of the Programme, graduates are expected to achieve proficiency in Chinese and English and acquire professional translation and interpretation skills.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates from this Programme may pursue careers in both the public and private sectors.  They may take up positions as government translators/interpreters, public relations professionals, advertising agents, journalists and editors, translators for the mass media, legal translators, court interpreters, administrators, etc.  Alternatively, they may choose to work as free-lance translators and conference interpreters.

ACCREDITATION AND EXEMPTION

The Professional Diploma Programme in Translation and Interpretation previously offered by the College until the academic year 1997-98 has been accredited by a number of tertiary institutions in Australia and the UK.  On the basis of the institutional credit transfer arrangements, graduates of the Professional Diploma in Translation and Interpretation Programme have been eligible for completion of the corresponding on-campus Bachelor degree programmes within one or two years.

Locally, the Open University of Hong Kong has also accredited the Professional Diploma in Translation and Interpretation Programme and awarded block credits to its graduates towards completion of the University’s undergraduate degree in a related discipline of study.

The curriculum of the Higher Diploma in Translation and Interpretation Programme is currently under review for quality assurance and enhancement purposes.  The College is confident that the newly revised curriculum will experience no difficulty in securing the same accreditation status as has been accorded by the overseas and local tertiary institutions in the past.
