My experience of ‘Out Door Cook’
On Sunday 14th we had an assessment on ‘Out Door Cook’. We
were at Sha Tin station in the morning, ready for our
assessment. We started off our journey to the campsite, all the
girl guides were excited and nervous on the day. We were in
pairs for this exam (Karen Wong + Beatrice Wong, Alice Ma +
Michelle
Wong, Kate Sun + Katherine Kwok, Amy Mang + Flora Wong, and
Elizabeth Au + Karen Sy). When we got to the campsite we all
placed the foods, which we prepared into the fridge. Our
examiner came, and we learnt how to build campsites, table, etc.
Then we had to start cooking, Karen and I quickly prepared the
place we had for cooking. I cooked one dish and she did the
other, after we finished all the groups were tired and glad that
they had successfully finished their dishes. We all sat around
the table, and ate each other’s dish, and then we washed and
cleaned up together. The examiner was quite pleased with our
dishes but she gave a few tips to each group about their dish.
While we were cooking, we had many different problems to solve
because we were in the out doors and their weren’t so many
facilities provided. Taking my group as an example, we
couldn’t really balance the pot while it was cooking, and that
was quite dangerous. Secondly Karen accidentally broke an egg,
that was worse we didn’t have much left. Thirdly the guiders
had to help us start off the fire on the barbecue rack, it was
so difficult and tiring. But eventually after solving these few
problems we finished our dishes.
In my point of view, having problems isn’t at all bad because
you’ll know what you did wrong and will not make that mistake
next time. And that’s how we learn stuff, my knowing our
mistakes and improving them. During this exam I have learnt or
experience lots of stuff, such as teamwork, after this
assessment all our teamwork had increase a lot higher. In the
outdoors, I learnt we always had to observe the things around
ourselves to prevent dangerous accidents. I also learnt we had
to cooperate with other people and patiently listen to other
people’s idea. Lastly I learnt how to organize the gas to
start the fire on, without making any accidents.
In conclusion I have learnt numerous things just in one day, it
was a great experience for other girl guides and me, myself. I
will remember this experience and in the future, I will
participate in more of these activities.
I enjoyed my day, but I was very tired. I think all the girl
guides who went to the assessment will want to thank our guiders
for all their help and support they gave us during the
assessment. If we didn’t get the help and support from them,
we may not have passed this assessment.
