The Chinese Rhenish Church was founded by the German Rhenish Mission in 1847. The Hong Kong Synod has celebrated the 150th anniversary of the church last year (1997).
The founding of the Chinese Rhenish Church was closely connected with the activities of Rev. Dr. Karl Friedrich August Gutzlaff, the first Lutheran missionary in China.
In 1844, he founded the Chinese Union to train Chinese Missionaries. Rev. Wong Yeun Sum, the first missionary of the Chinese Rhenish Church, was a student of Rev. Dr. Gutzlaff.
