Position

(a) Adjectives can come before the word they describe:

• It's a modern kitchen.
• Don't leave broken bottle around.

(b) Adjectives can come after certain verbs, such as be, seem, become, etc., when they describe the subject:

• That dress is expensive.
• Books are not cheap nowadays.
• She became angry with him.
• Suddenly he seemed very old.

NOTE:

i) When we are talking about something specific, and we are using the verb be, we can express the idea in two ways:

• That dress is expensive.
• It was an expressive dress.
• (These two sentences are about one particular dress.)

ii) When we are talking generally, then we can only use the form in (b):

• Books are not cheap nowadays.
• (This is a comment about all books.)
