Five main types of adjectives

(a) Subjective adjectives - describe what the speaker/writer thinks

• You get a beautiful view from the top of the hill.
• That's a very expensive book.

(b) Characteristic adjectives - describe things which exist

• Age (the old man)
• Size (the small town)
• Shape (the round tower)
• Colour (the blue sky)

(c) Proper name adjectives - formed from proper names

• Indian restaurant
• Australian dairy products

(d) Materials adjectives - what things are made from

• A plastic bag
• Cotton socks

(e) Purpose adjectives - tell the purpose of the noun

• A swimming costume
• A hunting dog
