Summary:

Year -1962
Yu(Ng Chan Yu), Wah(Bowie Lam), and Wah's girlfriend Ling(Maggie Siu) are three good friends from China trying to make a living in Hong Kong. Their friendship began when Yu saved Wah from drowning during their swim to HK. Their common dream is to be able to someday open a diner in Hong Kong. Both Wah and Yu are hard workers but they just seem unable to hold a job for long. Desperate for money to marry Ling, and finding themselves out of work yet again, Wah agrees to join in a con job when approached by a man who claims to be a cop. The plan was for Wah to shoplift some merchandise at a store and Yu to report him and earn a $200 reward. They would pay the cop part of the reward and he would use his connections to release Wah from jail. Unfortunately for Wah, the cop was nowhere to be seen when he was put in jail. In trying to escape from jail, Wah accidentally kills a guard and was sentenced to twenty years in prison.

While in prison, Wah learns that Ling is pregnant with his child. Not wanting her to see him in his condition, he refuses to let Ling visit him but he hopes Ling could wait for his release from prison.

With one less breadwinner in the household and Ling pregnant, Yu resorts to working two jobs. Yu's mother(Leung Bo Ching) later arrives from China and reunites with her son. Yu was at Ling's side when the baby was born. With dad unable to personally register for the baby's birth and not wanting the child to be labeled illegitimate by leaving father's name blank, Yu finally agrees to put his name down as the father of the baby boy named Sun(Kwok Tak Shun).

To help make ends meet, Ling secretly takes up a singing job and leaves the baby in a neighbor's care while she's at work. Yu comes home one day to find the baby crying and running a high fever. He persuades Ling to quit her job but knowing how much Ling loves to sing and how much they need the extra income, he lets her keep her job.

Year - 1965
It was a period of civil unrest. Banks were experiencing mass withdrawals and many people find themselves losing everything they have overnight. Unemployment rate was high and the streets were filled with demonstrators and rioters. Yu loses both his jobs while Ling and Yu's mom lose their life savings. Unable to deal with the loss, Yu's mom commits suicide. While out looking for a job one day, Yu is maimed when he accidentally steps on a home made bomb that is meant for Fu, a business man. In return for saving his life, Fu offers Yu a supervisor job at his garment factory. Satisfied with Yu's performance on his job, Fu offers to help Yu start his own business by providing him the initial capital he needs. Soon, Yu is the proud owner of his own factory.

On the night of his factory's grand opening, Yu confesses his love for Ling in a drunken state. Unable to forget her commitments to Wah, Ling tries to suppress her feelings for Yu. Realizing that their relationship will not amount to anything and not wanting to betray Wah, Yu decides to move out.

Year - 1973
Yu manages to make a fortune during this period of stock market rallies but he also loses everything overnight in the stock market crash of '73. Just when he thinks he has lost everything, Ling shows up and takes him in. Ling has saved enough money from the monthly housekeeping money that Yu has been giving her and has bought a diner which she intends to name as "New Ah-Yu's Diner."

Year - 1980's
Wah is released from prison and reunites with the family. Sun, who is now grown, finds himself unable to accept that Wah is his real dad.
