The
Hong Kong museum of
Medicine
The
Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences is opened in 1996. The beautiful
Edwardian building was classified as a listed monument because of historical
and architectural interest. It was used as the Institute of Pathology and
has witnessed what our older
generation has been through in fighting epidemics of plague, smallpox and
tuberculosis. A treasure of interesting old medical equipment are in display
in the museum, like the wooden table shown below used to chain up buffaloes
to collect fluid from cowpox lesions to produce the smallpox vaccine. It was
still used as late as the 1960's. As a crossroad between
east
and west, a rich and interesting collection of herbs, instruments and
explanatory notes on traditional Chinese medicine is on display currently.
The maintenance of such an aged building is prohibitively expensive, and the
museum’s continuous operation depends on your generous support.
