Welcome to the dimly lit, ballistic
gangster world of John Woo and his alter ego Chow Yun Fat.
A Better Tomorrow is the film that cemented the legendary John Woo
as the king of Hong Kong gunplay; years before the triumphs of
Bullet in the Head and Face/Off , Woo blew a hole in the HK movie
scene with this gangster epic of loyalty and revenge.
Establishing his directorial motifs of slow motion gunplay,
explosive endings and consummate screen style, A Better Tomorrow
also established Chow Yun Fat as the biggest screen star in Asia
next to Jackie Chan before his Hollywood breakthrough with 'The
Replacement Killers" and "The Corruptor"
Chow plays counterfeiter Mark Gor, whose
partner Ho, has a younger brother Kit, in the police force. Kits
knows nothing of Ho's life of crime until a gangland doublecross
results in the death of their father; the younger man's love for his
big brother turns to hatred; until the two of them, along with Mark,
are drawn into a violent showdown against the syndicate.
