The first Hong Kong Policewomen
contigent in 1951.
The percentage of
women in the Hong Kong Police Force is one of the highest among major
police forces. The first woman sub-inspector was appointed in 1949;
two years later, the first intake of nine women constables marched onto
the parade ground at Wong Chuk Hang Police Training School (PTS).
Today, over 3000
women wear their stylishly-tailored uniforms. They are not mere
decorations. Women served in every region. Many highest women
ranking in the force. Sex is not the factor in the rank structure.
When women in the first recuited, they were regarded as
a quaint novelty. No more. Naturely, there are areas like protection
of women and children where a female in uniform can cope better than a man. In
forensic laboratories and on launches far from land, women serve on equal basis
with male comrades.
The first Hong Kong Auxilary Policewomen
contigent in 60s.
In the torrid summer of 1967 when women police stood firm against rioting mobs. Their presence brought calm to situations that were potentially explosive.
That first infusion of women in 1951 quickly proved its
worth. Out on the streets, they soon stopped being a novelty and became a
necessity. Women constables worked their way up the ranks. Virtully
every officer cadre intake since 1960 has had a female component. In
traffic, on the frontier, in CID squad rooms and out on the far water of
territorial boundaries, women help police Hong Kong.
First Women Police Tactical Unit (PTU) formed
up in 90s.
