The World Of Afterschool
Jobs Is Explored
---By Donna Brunet

Having an aftenoon job is not all the glory some students may think it is. Taking on an extra responsibility such as job after school hours and still attending high school is thought of by those students who do not work to mainly a "pressure putter."

Students that take a full six hour schedule at school then go to work at 4 or 5 o'clock are the ones that must have to watch their grades more closely. When that time of the school year comes around for 9 week and mid-term exams, a tremendous amount of pressure is out upon those person's shoulders.

Senior Pam Bundy, head majorette and actively involved student, works part time at Sears. When asked to comment on how she feels about working after a full day at school she said, "I get home sometimes at 4 or 5 o'clock, change clothes, then go to work until 9 o'clock. Most of the time it's okay, but sometimes it can get to be a real hassle. When I work I usually eat supper around 9:30. Then I do my homework and get ready for bed. I can't really complain though because through working I have a car and lots of things I buy for myself. I also feel more independent. I buy my own clothes and have extra money to go out when I want. There are sacrifices you have to make but overall it's really worth it."

The students that attend school only a few hours in the morning then go to work would seem to have a much easier time keeping up their grades. They usually have time before or after work to study.

Myra Bergeron, a COE student who works also part time at Sears, talked about the pressure that was put on her even though she leaves school after third hour. She said, "In a way working after school does put pressure on me because when I have a big test the next day it always seems like the night before I have to work until 9 o'clock. When you study before work you seem to forget it during all the hassling that goes on. Sometimes it's alright (working) when you get off of work around 7:30 because you stil have time to study for your tests."

No matter what the school or work schedule may be, all students that work would agree that all work was worth the effort when payday comes around.
