Who is H. L. Bourgeois?
By Eva McDonald

      H. L. Bourgeois High School was named after Henry Louis Bourgeois, a man dedicated to the field of education. This man accepted the job of Superintendant of Terrebonne Parish Schools only after holding the title of both teacher and principal at various schools. He accepted the job in 1914 at the age of twenty-seven. He continued his dedication to education for forty-one years and for this reason H.L. Bourgeois was given his name.

The first senior class, the Class of 1974, platooned with Evergreen Junior High until December 3, 1973, the day the school opened.

This class was given the honor of voting on such things as the school mascot. As we all know, the mascot chosen for HLB was the Braves, but HLB could have been known as either the Beavers or the Bears.

Just as any other school, HLB also established tradition. According to one tradtion, seniors should wear white to their Senior Prom, for good luck. Another tradition occurs when juniors recieve their senior rings. They run wild in the halls searching for all their friends for the purpose of "turning their rings." And still another says that after you receive your diploma, turn your ring around to face the world.

After only six years, H. L. Bourgeois has acquired many fond memories for its students The class of 1974 will certainly have a lot to talk about at their class reunion.
