One hundred years after the First Pass came to a close, Pern again began to experience changes in the planet's behavior. Volcanoes began to erupt, slight tremors shook the earth, and then, all of a sudden, a meteor fell from the heavens, an unexpected fireball that demolished Benden Weyr. The few surviving wings and a single young gold that had been out of the weyr relocated to cavern system on the Southern Continent while repairs to Benden were made. With them went settlers who thought to support the weyr in its time of need and, in the process, gain land on the abandoned continent. Now, as the Red Planet again begins its approach, the riders have moved back to Benden. The settlers, however, have remained, and a call had been sent out to any and all willing to populate a weyr to protect them. Silver Shores is that weyr. The pocked walls of an extinct volcano prove ideal for the housing for dragons and their riders. One side of the mountain has been blown away, opening the weyrbowl to an inland freshwater sea. |
