First of Several

"Mr. James Lumley, an old Rocky Mountain trapper, who has been stopping at the Everett House for several days, makes a most remarkable statement to us, and one which if authenticated, will produce the greatest excitement in the scientific world."

This story begins in the middle of September in the mountains about seventy-five or one hundred miles from the Great Falls of the Upper Missouri, and in the neighborhood of what is known as Cadotte Pass. Mr. Lumley saw a bright luminous body in the sky after sunset. The object moved with great speed east. The remained visible for close to five seconds the object then separated into ,as Mr. Lumely describes, " the bursting of a sky-rocket in the air." Soon after Lumely heard an earth jarring explosion. The explosion was followed by a rushing sound and a strong wind. The air became sulphurous.

Lumely really thought nothing of this until the next day when he saw about 2 miles from his camp a large path cut through the forest. Huge trees had been uprooted or broke off near the ground. Hilltops had been cut down and new ones created where the earth had piled up. There was widespread destruction everywhere Lumely looked and all this had seem to take place in only a matter of minutes.

Lumely followed the path of destruction and concluded the cause must have something like an immense stone carving into the side of a mountain. Lumely found the stone and discovered that it had been divided into compartments. He found writing on the stone which he described as hierogylphics . Mr. Lumely also found fragments of something resembling glass. He noted dark stains on the ground which he believed to be caused by some type of liquid.

After Lumely related his story with such sincerity it had to be believed, it was theorized that the stone was a meteor. The meteor had been visible to many that September. People also speculated that the meteor was a means of transportation for a superior alien race that may one day take control of earth and force mankind into servitude.

This story was recorded in the' Kingston Whig" a local newspaper of this period. This story predates any air craft except for the hot air balloon. Charring and burning upon entry into the earth's atmosphere had not yet been studied. This encounter also shares many similarities with the Roswell encounter.

Just after sunset a luminous body is visible moving quickly across the sky. The object then bursts into several pieces. This is followed by an explosion and rushing sound. Later a huge gouge is found in the earth as if cut by a large stone. Strange writing described as hieroglyphics or Chinese is discovered in the wreckage.

One would think that over a course of more than 80 years they would get it right. Or if the trip was so dangerous they would stop making it. To continue to try seems almost human. On the other hand if we have something they greatly need the risk would seem minimal. No doubt something happened what and why still remains a Fascinating Mystery.
