Red Smoke
C.S. Desverges, a scoutmaster, had a strange encounter of the second kind. August 19, 1952
Desverges was driving three scouts home, when he saw what he thought was a small aircaraft
having to make an emergency landing. He stopped the car grabbed a flashlight and a machete to
investigate. The boys monitored his progress from the car.
In his police report Desverges states that as he began to make his way throught the bush he was
overcom by a peculiar pungent odor in the air. As he got closer to the clearing the temperature began to
intensify. He continued about 30 yards in to the clearing, by now the heat was almost unbearable.
He looked to the sky for direction but a large, dark object overhead was blocking his view. He aimed
his flashlight at the object.
He described it as a disk, with a smooth, gray surface. The belly was concave and
the top had a dome in the center. Along the edge of the vessel were vanes with openings in between. He heard
a sound, like a door opening, a small red ball that expanded into a cloud floated toward him. As the cloud reached
him he fainted.
The boys watched from the car. In their statements they said they saw him shine his flashlight upward. Then
a red ball of fire engulfed him and he fell to the ground. The boys ran to a neighboring house for help.
When the deputy sherriff and a constable arrived, Desverges was trying to make it back to the road. He
told his story in a detailed, coherent way. Everyone returned to the clearing to investigate. However, the
group found nothing, not even Desverges' flashlight and machete.
When Desverges got back in his car he noticed his arms were slightly burned and there were scorch marks and holes
in his hat.
Air Force investigators decieded this story was a hoax. However, they could not explain how it could happen.
They could provide no explanation for his injuries, or his burned cap as well.
