The LDA approach to runway 26L at Honolulu International is a quite interesting one, both for us controllers to watch and for the pilots to fly. It basically consists of an angled approach to runway 26L followed by a 45 degree turn to land on the runway. The attachment below simplifies this further.
The localizer for this approach is located in the vicinity of runway 26R and the heading is 304. The pilot begins his turn to heading 259 at about 2 or 3 miles out.
Things to note about this approach:
- At no time must there be any arrivals to runway 26R.
- Landing clearance must be given at or before 5 miles.
- All aircraft must cross SECIL at or above 3000ft.
- The localizer frequency for the LDA approach is 109.10 and the OBS is 304. There is no glide slope associated with the localizer.
