For the tournament I used the Black Templar's list
Battle
1:
For
my first game, I went up against Clark with his Ultra Marines. He had
four 5 man Tactical Squads with Lascannon, 2 Dev Squads one with Missile
Launchers and the other with Heavy Bolters, 2 Land Speeders and a Vindicator.
It was a shooty army with only one Assault squad led by a Librarian.
With
him using the Librarian, it enabled me to use the Be Pure in Mind,
Body and Soul ability of the templars. I realize that this is
a rarely used power because it doesn't seem to give you much of an advantage.
On the other hand its like the Blood Rage of the Blood Angels and you
roll TWO dice! Also, our Mission was Across Enemy lines which meant
that the player with the most 5 man squad on the other side of the table
would win. With only 24" separating our units, I gambled that I
would go first, which I did.
I
pushed all the units across no-man's land, and the squad with the Emperor's
champion and High Marshall was able to reach close combat on the first
turn! Though I was unable to kill off the squad, it certainly put Clark
on the defensive. On his turn he put most of his Firepower on the Land
Raider, immobilizing it (I had transported the 5 man squad inside the
Raider to get them closer). He also counter assaulted me with his Assault
Squad along with his Librarian which was challenged by the Emperor's
Champion. The combat was once again tied.
On
my 2nd turn I promptly got the assault squad, 2nd Combat Squad and 5
man squad into close combat. My whole army was now on his side of the
table. In the assault phase the combat was still locked, his heavy bolter
Dev Squad however, broke and ran off the table enabling me to consolidate
to the Tactical squad. His 2nd turn saw the appearance of the Calidus
Assassin which joined the fight with the Tactical Squad, the fight with
the Librarian saw him taking a wound and he promptly retreated with
the assault squad while I opted to consolidated. His other dev squad
was destroyed in combat with the assault squad.
The
third and fourth turn just saw more close combat. The Calidus did her
best to kill of the ten squad Marine but was now joined by the other
6 man squad. Though the Dragoons couldn't kill the Calidus, they were
able to wipeout the Tactical Squad. I was able to kill the Librarian
finally but at the cost of the Emperor's Champion. He did have bionics
though but failed his roll. At games end Clark only had a Calidus, a
damaged Vindicator and a Land Speeder.

Total Victory
Battle
2:
The
second battle was against Miko and his Ulthwe Eldar. The Mission was
The Messengers and we made the mistake of putting the messengers inside
the transports. Oh well we mis-read the rules. I knew I was going to
have a problem because of his Falcons (which had holo-fields), and Wave
Serpent which could move 24 and drop off his messengers. Anyway he got
first turn, and I once again opted to use the Be Pure in Mind.....
vow. Reasoning that I have to try and get into combat as soon as
possible.
His first turn shooting wasn't very effective though he got my 5 man
squad down to 1 with his starcannons. My turn saw me racing forward.
Once again I got the 8 man Combat squad with the Marshall and Champion
in combat. However, I had to assault the Wraithlord with my Champion
hoping that the Iron Halo will save him. Alas, that was not so and the
the champion was crushed under the foot of the Wraithlord. I also tried
to down the Wave Serpent with the Power fist in the Assault squad, but
missed. However, I was able to dispatch one of the Black Guardian Squads.
The
2nd turn, saw the power of his guardian squads as he riddled the remains
of the combat squad that assaulted him killing more than half of them.
He was also able to assault my Assault Squad with the Banshees and dispatched
my Dreadnought with the seer council. I did get the Wraithlord down
to 1 wound with the Power fist.
For
the next two turns, my other combat squad smashed into the rest of his
guardian squads and eventually ended up in combat with the Wraithlord,
who finally killed the Marshall and his squad. I did get two messengers
off the board though. However this was off-set by the destruction of
my assault squad and Miko zipping over the messengers in the Falcons
and Wave Serpents into the touch zone. Though I broke his army, I wasn't
able to damage his expensive units. (We forgot that you couldn't put
the messengers inside the vehicles.)

Total Defeat
Battle
3
My
third Battle was against Lucas Jacinto and his Dark Eldar. (Oh my another
Eldar Player!) This time the mission was Suicide Squad. I chose my 10
man combat squad as my Suicide squad and Lucas chose his grotesque to
be his suicide squad. I decided to use the 6+ invulnerable save this
time because I was expecting a lot of damage from his archon getting
into close combat. At least it will give me some protection.
The
terrain was quite bad, with a river cutting the table in half. I decided
to bite the bullet, and deployed my squads as close as possible to him.
Again I went first, so I jumped my assault marines halfway into the
table, and my rhinos splashed across the river, however the rhino of
the suicide squad got stuck! And I was forced to deploy them and start
walking. However, I got this idea of mounting them up in the Land Raider
next turn, so I moved the Land Raider closer to them. My shooting phase
saw the Talos wounded, two grotesques dead, and a downed Raider. No
close combat yet.
Lucas's
turn saw him dark lancing my Land Raider and Kaboom! Oh well no more
taxi ride. He also killed about half my assault squad with splinter
rifles. However, no close combat yet.
In
the second turn, my assault squad got into assault with his Warrior
squad, the suicide squad waded into the river while the other combat
squad with the Marshall and Emperor's champion took a pot shot at the
Ravager, stunning it and then getting into combat with the Reaver Bikes.
As expected the reaver bikes were wiped out and the Marshall and his
men consolidated back into the rhino. The Assault squad was able to
win combat with the Warrior squad but they did not break and flee, so
combat was locked.
In
Lucas' second turn, he destroyed the Marshall's Rhino, Immobilized my
Dreadnought, and the Talos got into combat with the Assault Squad, guaranteeing
its doom. His raiders also started flying towards my own lines. In the
next two turns, I was able to get my suicide squad into combat when
they were able to down a raider and promptly assaulted the Warrior squad.
The Marshall and his men did the same and charged the grotesques. Eventually
we ended up wiping out the warriors and grotesques, plus the Talos ended
up in combat with my suicide squad which they were able to dispatch
with the help of the Emperor's Champion. Meanwhile his Archon's Raider
got immobilized and was forced to walk the rest of the way. This caused
a delay in getting him into combat which I took advantage off and I
rapid fired and Plasma cannoned his retinue, all died except the Archon
(because of that shadow field). However, once the Archon got into combat,
there was no stopping him.
All
in all a very bloody battle. I won however, because my suicide squad
rampaged through 3 of his units so that gave me double victory points.
Result:
Total Victory
At
the end of the day we were all very tired and the calls for a fourth
game was simply refused so off went Raymond (the Judge) to tally the
scores. I was quite surprised to win because I lost one of the games
badly. However, Raymond said that my very good sportsmanship scores
really bumped my score. So there you have it, being nice to your opponent
does count!
See
you all next year!
