Q. How did JETS begin?
A. A long time ago (1995, I believe) in a galaxy far, far away (this one), a bunch of science nuts got together and formed a Hockaday chapter of the Junior Engineering Technical Society, because they didn't want people to think St. Marks was the only school with potential engineers. They won a bunch of competitions just to spite St. Marks, which was getting around 216th place in competitions at the time. JETS was highly unsupervised, and it's a marvel that the school is still standing. But now we practically represent the science department at Hockaday, and have much more publicity.
Q. How did this website begin?
A. In mid-October 1999, we were all scrounging for extra points for the BEST competition, and one category was "Use of Available Technology". Priscilla and Chungy decided to start a JETS website for an extra 10 points. Since then, it has progressed to beyond an excuse.
Q. How do I join JETS?
A. For starters, you have to be a student at Hockaday in the Upper School. In the beginning of the year, go to the club fair and sign up for JETS. You won't regret it. If this event has already passed, you can still join, but you have to work extra hard to be considered a member. And those that sign up but don't come to meetings will be mocked and laughed at.
Q. How much of a time investment is JETS?
A. You will never see your house again. With our new block scheduling program, we'll basically meet every Y and Conference period possible, and stay at school until around 10PM during "Competition Crunch Time". Be prepared to sacrifice holidays, too. During the 98-99 year, we spent most of the holiday break poring over the Canpactor.
Q. What sort of things do you do in JETS?
A. Build things, take things apart, blow things up, start over. We also consume large quantities of popcorn, pizza, Dr. Pepper, and Mountain Dew. Freshmen will be expected to perform manual labor and clean up hazardous materials. Don't worry, it's not *that* toxic...
