The road went down a real steep hill and played out into a narrow trail into a gully with steep walls on either side.
The further I went, the more I became aware of an uneasy feeling I had. I noticed that there was a strange, deep, pungent oder in the air. Then I heard something!
I turned around just in time to see a big rock go wizzing by my head. It had barely missed me.
I jumped behind a tree and looked in the direction from which the rock had come.
There I saw a large human  or human-like shape silouetted in the late afternoon sun.
Whatever it was, it let out a terrible screem as it threw anotber rock.
I was afraid.
After all, I was all alone out in the woods, miles from the nearest town and nobody knew where I was except for that crazy old man. Visions of "Deliverence" flashed throughmy mind.
I dodged the second rock and thought about running away, but something inside me drove me on.
I'm wasn't fast so it took me a while to climb up that hill. By the time I got there, whoever or whatever I saw was gone.
The smell was very strong. I found broken twigs and branches where something big had passed throuhh the bush.
The ground itself was dry and rocky, so I found no footprints.
I tried to follow the trail of the broken branches, but it ran into an open field where there was no trail.
Before long I noticed it was getting late. I decided I better give up  before it got dark.
At first I thought I might stick around and come back the next day, but it didn't work out.
When I got back to my car, I tried to back out, but it wouldn't back up.
I couldn't get my car out so I walked back to the first house andI called for a tow truck. They came and pulled me back to the road.
They told me my transmission was bad. I could drive forward, but not in reverse. They said if I wanted them to fix it, they couldn't start for two days.
They said if I wanted to drive back to Oklahoma City, it would probably be O.K. as long as I was careful not to go anywhere where I would have to back out.
I decided to go home that night and give up the sasquatch hunt for now.
I never made it back to Englander Hollar.
When I looked at the newspaper the next day, I saw that there was another story.
The boy who had made the report to the Police had now recanted.
He now claimed that it was all a joke. He had gotten the scratches by wrestling with his friend.
After that most people were ready to close he book on that sasquatch case.
Sometimes, however, I still wonder about what happened that weekend in the woods of Oklahoma.
Did the boy lie?
Yes he did. Either he lied when he said he saw a sasquatch, or he lied when he said he did not.
Did I see a sasquatch that weekend?
Well I saw something strange in the woods, that's for sure, but maybe it was all a hoax and somebody was trying to scare me.
Maybe it was that old man or somebody else  trying to scare me away.
To tell the truth, I don't know.
Maybe I really did see a sasquatch?
