GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF PLAY TO KEEP IN MIND

OFFENSIVE
DEFENSIVE
Forwards:
Constant motion - be a moving target at all times --- cycle cycle cycle Cover the pass lanes in the offenseive and neutral zones
Try to have two forwards near the net Always shut down the point men
Move the puck 360 degrees: do not forget to include defensemen in the attack Protect the outer slot area (10 feet or so out from the goalie)
Keep head up at all times Backcheck at least as hard as you rush!
Anticipate the play: know where the puck is GOING TO BE

Pressure the puck carriers when they are within reach of your proper position

DOUBLE TEAM the superstars if they are hogging the puck - make them pass it off to lesser players
Cover for your defenseman if he rushes or pinches
Defensemen:
Pass puck quickly to avoid interception - if you cough it up, it's a breakaway Play the MAN then the PUCK
Keep up with the attack, but watch for cherry-pickers behind you Never "help" your partner if it leaves you out of position - especially in the slot area
Shots should generally be LOW and HARD from the point - much greater chace of rebounds and deflections Step up on shooters - do not let them back you into the slot
Only pinch when you are CERTAIN someone has you backed up, or that you can recover if you miss the puck Talk to your goalie if he loses sight of the puck - particularly behind the net in his blind spot
Do not throw the puck forward in a panic play in the defensive end. Often wrapping it back behind our net is the safest play
Goalies:
Stop puck behind the net on dump-ins whenever possible Challenge shooters: your defensemen are responsible for clearing rebounds
Work on puck handling skills: be part of the attack Stand up whenever possible
Make breakout passes when it is safe - especially for power plays Keep stick on the ice whan moving laterally
Help block centering passes with your stick
Hug the post tight - prevent stuff-in goals
Talk to players when you see a good outlet lane if they do not
Communicate with defensemen about your preferences for shot blocking and clearing shooters from the slot

BACKCHECKING PRINCIPLES(possibly the most important part of a winning game)
In offensive zone, stay about 10 feet from your man
In neutral zone, stay about 1 foot from your man
In defensive zone, be right on your man (like white on rice)
