11/21/03-I have the spare engine dissassembled. It actually looks good and clean. The DX manifold fits on the head perfectly, although I still need to match the ports. Tomorrow, shop for turbo!
I found this picture in a old honda performance book. I think it is the old hks turbo manifold. That would be really nice to have. But, since I'm poor, I'll use what I have.
This is my project engine, what should I do with it though? Beef it up and run lots of boost? let it rust? Put a d16a1 head on it and then run lots of boost?
This is a intercooler off a 1999 F350 Diesel. I got it for free. I immediately saw its potential;).
I figure I can just cut 6 cores off the top and bottom, then cap it off. Then I cut off the gigantor pipes and weld some modest 2' or 2.5' inlet and outlet pipes.
Last week I got bored, so I cut out my grill with the sawzall. I think I can put my modified diesel intercooler in there.
11/27/03- I picked up a turbo yesterday at pull-n-save.picture1 picture2 It is of a dodge shadow. It only had 85K miles on it and the turbo has very little shaft play. I took the exhaust manifold also. I will use this to make my custom adapter plate.Adapter Plate pic 1 Adapter Plate pic 2 I accidentally broke one of the water fittings off though.Broken Fitting That'll be a b#!@*h to get out. I got my spare engine dissassembled to the long block. I will use this to mock up my manifold and oil lines. I can also use this oil pan to weld on my oil drain fitting off the car.
11-29-03- With using this turbo I found the center section and compressor turbine must be rotated. To do this simply undo the 10mm bolt on the clamp you see in the middle of the picture. Then with some gentle force split them apart.Picture You also need to grind off the pin that indexes the exhaust housing to the center section. If you don't the housing will be off center and it will prevent the turbine from spinning. Rotating the center section lines up the oil drain tube at the bottom and the compressor turbine outlet pointed forwards. That way it faces where the intercooler inlet will be. When you rotate the housing, the wastgate mounting holes no longer line up. So, I fabbed up this fancy mounting bracket to hold the wastegate in it's normal position. I also started the modifying of the diesel intercooler. I have named it the "HONDACOOLER"1 2. I chopped off the huge inlet pipes flush with the body. This way I can weld the holes shut. I also removed 4 cores from the top and bootom of the intercooler. I removed the front bumper to see if it would fit. Well, I still have a few things to cut up still. But it will fit, eventually. I also got a gift from my friend. He works at a VW dealership, he found this in the warranty returns. It is a K03 turbo off a 1.8t. It looks almost brand new with zero shaft play. It is a smaller unit overall but the compressor wheel is almost the same size. All I need to do is put a new compressor wheel on and it is good to go. Notice also theadjustable wastegate and the odd looking exhaust port. Maybe I will use this turbo on another project.
