Todd Rundgren Uses Two Yamaha O3Ds as House Mixers On With A Twist Tour
Longtime Rundgren Engineer Amazed At Sound Quality

SACRAMENTO, Calif.(February 2, 1998) - When Todd Rundgren and crew set out for a five week tour to promote his new album With A Twist (Guardian) featuring 11 of Todd's classics, Bossa Nova style, they will be sporting two Yamaha 03D Digital Mixer as their main house consoles. A Yamaha ProMix 01 will also be used at the house position. Provided by Skip's Music in Sacramento, CA, the Yamaha dealer has been assisting with Rundgren's instrument and audio needs for many years now.

"We're doing an acoustic show for this tour," states house engineer, Larry Toomey, who's been Todd's engineer for over ten years and purchased the Yamaha 03D for this tour as well as his other live gigs. "The combination of the 03Ds and the ProMix01 is ideally suited for our set up because it allows me the ability to go from song to song, flip-flop between scenes, and have everything completely brought back up instantaneously. Toomey states the built-in effects, compressors and dynamics on every input are amazing. "I'm also amazed at the difference in the quality of the reverb," he notes.

The house set up consists of two Yamaha 03Ds with an ADAT, interfacing with a ProMix 01, as well as other outboard gear. "The Yamaha style of digital mixing makes so much sense, with the added benefit of complete computer control, on-board automation, and snapshot memory, it's an unbelievable mixer for its price!"

Another factor of the significance of using the 03D mixers at the house position, notes Toomey, is that large consoles dictate where he has to set up, and that location is based on promoters, ticket sales and seating in most concert situations. "With the size of the Yamaha 03D, I can set up in the best possible area, without making any compromises to sound quality for the listening audience."

It's fitting to note what additional role the mixers will play. The With A Twist stage set looks like a "Bossa Nova" style bar, with the guitar tech and other production crew attending to the bar patrons' tables. As ticketholders enter the club to hear Todd's concert, they will actually enter while he is performing in a "Bossa Nova" style bar-the concert goer is also the bar's patron.

Rundgren's tour began with two nights at Slim's in San Francisco, followed by The House of Blues LA, shows in San Diego, Phoenix, Texas, and working East to Boston.

The Yamaha 03D offers 26 inputs, 4 buses plus stereo bus output, 16 direct outputs, six aux sends, and two internal effect processors. Input features include 4-band parametric EQ, bus assignment routing, and a limiter/compressor/gate on every channel. 18 of the 26 inputs are analog with 20-bit AD/DA converters, and 8 mic preamps with phantom power are provided.
