Police detain witnesses over Indonesian bombings
Indonesia's vice-president Yusuf Kalla says two people have been detained over twin
bombings in Indonesia that killed 20 people, adding they were witnesses who could
lead to the capture of those responsible.
Mr Kalla told Jakarta's Metro TV channel the two people had been apprehended by
police in the Sulawesi island region of Poso, close to the Christian-dominated town of
Tentena where the bombs exploded early Saturday.
"Police in Poso have gained preliminary evidence and even detained two people who
can be used as witnesses to trace the perpetrators and can shed a light as to the
mastermind behind the bombing," he said.
In Indonesia, police can detain people without formally arresting and charging them
with a crime.
Police have said they suspect Islamic militants responsible for other major bomb
attacks of having a hand in Saturday's explosions, which have threatened to reignite
violence between Muslims and Christians in the troubled region.
