THE SITUATION IN AMBON/MOLUCCAS - Report No. 485
1. EXPLOSION - An explosion rocked the Mardika Market in Ambon, at about 2:30
p.m. today. We learned from firsthand information that the explosion took place near
the Wijaya hotel, not far from the Amans Hotel. The bom had been placed in a becak
(pedicap) in which at that moment were a mother with her 6 year old child; both were
injured. Five other people as well reportedly were injured and taken to the Alfata
hospital for treatment. Two motorbicycles were ruined by the explosion.
2. FOLLOW-UP MALINO-II - Moluccas governor Karel Albert Ralahalu and a number
of other Maluku figures, including bishop P.C. Mandagi and former speaker of the
Moluccas Legislative Council Ety Sahuberua, are currently in Jakarta to report to vice
president Yusuf Kalla on the latest developments in the area following the signing of
the Malino II peace pact in February 2002, which then officially marked the end of the
conflict in the region.
During the meeting, which meanwhile has taken place, Kalla was accompanied by
Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Alwi Shihab, Minister of Justice and Human
Rights Hamid Awaluddin and Minister of Public Works Djoko Kirmanto
3. FRIENDSHIP BRIDGE - The local government is organizing a meeting called
"Jembatan Persahabatan" i.e. Friendship's Bridge. The 100 participants involved are of
various ages and come from the island of Ceram and the city of Ambon. They follow a
program of practicing socialization, mutual trust etc. in the form of games, contests
and so on. The meeting was opened last August 23 and will go on for six days.
