Strong earthquake jolts Papua
JAKARTA (AP): A powerful earthquake rocked Papua province on Thursday but there
were no reports of injuries or damage, an official said.
The 6.0-magnitude quake, centered about 60 kilometers beneath remote forests and
170 kilometers northwest of the capital city Jayapura on Papua island, said Jabar of
the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.
The quake, which struck at 6:27 p.m. local time was felt in town of Wamena on the
northern coast of Papua, about 3,300 kilometers east of Jakarta, said Jabar.
He said there were no reports of damage or injuries on the island.
"The center of quake was near remote forests where few people live," Jabar said.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation, is prone to earthquakes because of
its location on an arc of volcanoes and oceanic trenches encircling the Pacific Basin.
