Earthquake jolts Maluku, no injuries reported
JAKARTA (AP): A moderate earthquake struck Indonesia's Maluku islands early
Saturday, but no injuries or damage were reported, seismologists said.
The magnitude 5.4 quake was centered about 33 kilometers (20 miles) under the sea
and struck at 2:48 a.m. (1748 GMT), said Lukito, a Meteorology and Geophysics
Agency official.
It rattled Ternate, a town in the Maluku islands, about 2,600 kilometers (1,600 miles)
northeast of Jakarta, for about three minutes, he said.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval due to its
location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire."
The country has been hit by hundreds of aftershocks since a magnitude 9 earthquake
triggered a tsunami on Dec. 26 that killed more than 170,000 people across Asia. (**)
