Police arrest suspect linked to Poso bombings
JAKARTA (AFP): Police have arrested a man wanted over suspected links to a series
of bombings in Indonesia's troubled Central Sulawesi province, police said on Sunday.
The suspect was arrested Thursday in Yogyakarta and was sent Saturday to the
Central Sulawesi capital of Palu for further questioning, said Central Sulawesi police
chief Aryanto Sutadi.
Sutadi told AFP that the man, identified only by his initials MAS, was believed to have
been implicated in the bomb attacks on the offices of two non-governmental
organizations in the town of Poso on April 28.
There were no injuries from the blasts.
The suspect, Sutadi said, had told police interrogators in Yogyakarta that he had
helped finance the attacks and also provided information for the operations.
Parts of Central Sulawesi, including Poso, have been the scene of intermittent fighting
between Christians and Muslims that has left more than 1,000 people dead since
2000.
The government brokered a peace deal in the area 2001 but sporadic shootings and
bombings have continued. (**)
