Explosion rocks market in Ambon
JAKARTA (Antara): Maluku Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu has confirmed that an
explosion rocked the Mardika Market in Ambon, the provincial capital of Maluku, at
about 14:30 local time on Thursday.
"According to Maluku police chief Brig. Adityawarma, the blast had caused injury to
four people," Karel told reporters on the sidelines of his meeting with Vice President
Jusuf Kalla in Jakarta.
Karel and a number of other Maluku figures, namely Father Petrus Madagie and
former speaker of Maluku Legislative Council Ety Sahuberua, were in Jakarta to report
on the latest developments in Maluku following the signing of the Malino II peace pact
aimed at ending conflict in the region.
During the meeting, Kalla was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for People's
Welfare Alwi Shihab, Minister of Justice and Human Rights Hamid Awaluddin and
Minister of Public Works Djoko Kirmanto
"We have still not yet determined what caused the explosion at Mardika Market,"
Karel said.
"However, I have ordered Maluku police chief and his staff to immediately investigate
the blast," he said. (*)
