Indonesia arrests five more over Ambon blast
AMBON, Maluku (Agencies): Police said Friday they had arrested five more people
suspected of involvement in a bomb explosion that injured seven in the city of Ambon.
A home-made bomb exploded on Thursday afternoon at the open-air Mardika market
in the provincial capital of Maluku province, the site of simmering violence between
Muslims and Christians.
Police shot at the five as they tried to flee while being arrested on the nearby island of
Seram late Thursday, Ambon policeman Jefri Juniarta said.
Two of the suspects were being treated at a police hospital in Ambon with apparent
shot wounds to the leg and the three others were bruised, an AFP correspondent
saw.
The five are also believed to be involved in previous attacks in Ambon, including the
killings of five policemen on Seram in May, and the killing of two people in an attack
on a karaoke club in Ambon, Juniarta told reporters.
Police arrested a man who gave the bomb to the unwitting pedicab driver a few hours
after the blast at the market, frequented by both Muslims and Christians. (**)
