Second police post targeted in Indonesia's Maluku
Jakarta: There has almost been another attack on a Brimob [mobile police brigade]
post, following the attack which killed five personnel at a post in Loki village, Piru,
West Seram.
This time the group's target was the Brimob post manned by personnel from an East
Kalimantan unit currently deployed under operational control [of Maluku Police]
located in Lisabata Village, Taniwel, West Seram, around 250 km from Loki Village.
[Passage omitted]
Fortunately, a local called Yance knew about the attack. He immediately reported this
to the Brimob post.
Yance said that when he was riding his motorbike in the early hours of Wednesday [1
June 2005] from Lisabata Village to Nikulukan Village, two unfamiliar people carrying
organic weapons were caught in his headlights. [Passage omitted]
On hearing Yance's report, a number of the Brimob personnel, with Yance as their
guide, conducted sweeps around the two villages. When combing along the coast, the
Brimob members saw a number of masked people in a speedboat.
There was an exchange of fire for a few minutes. No-one was wounded. They
disappeared into the night on the speedboat. [Passage omitted]
Yance's statement was confirmed by a number of locals from Lisabata and Nikulukan
villages contacted by detikcom. The two villages are of different religions: Lisabata has
a Muslim majority, whilst Nikulukan has a Christian majority.
The West Seram regent, Ishak Saimima, also confirmed that the incident had
occurred. [Passage omitted]
The motive for the incident, according to the regent, was exactly the same as in the
attack at Loki Village: to create conflict in Maluku again. [Passage omitted]
However, the incident, which took place almost a week ago, was only known of today.
This is because the location of the incident is around 200 km east of Piru, the capital
of West Seram. Apart from the fact that there are no communications facilities at the
location, transportation is difficult, resulting in the information being received late by
the local government and the police. [Passage omitted: West Seram police had
received the report and all security posts were to conduct sweeps.]
