The Red Sox won the American League Pennant in a season shortened by a month due to World War I, then won the World Series for the fourth time in seven seasons. Each of their four wins over the Chicago Cubs was decided by one run. |
After three seasons as one of the AL's top pitchers, Babe Ruth also established himself as an offensive force and was a two-way star. He shared the league lead with 11 homers and posted a league-leading .555 slugging percentage, adding 26 doubles, 11 triples and a .408 on-base percentage. |
In addition to his growing offensive prowess, Ruth remained a top-shelf pitcher, posting 13 wins and a 2.22 ERA in 19 starts, with 18 complete games. |
During the World Series, Ruth shut out the Cubs in Game 1 and also earned the win in Game 4, completing what was then a record run of 29.2 shutout innings pitched in World Series play. |
The Red Sox ace though, was Carl Mays, who won 21 games with a 2.21 ERA and a league-leading eight shutouts in 33 starts, 30 of which ended in complete games. He also threw complete-game victories in Games 3 and 6 of the World Series. |
Joe Bush won 15 games with a 2.11 ERA, completing 26 of 31 starts with seven shutouts, while Sam Jones won 16 games with a 2.25 ERA and 16 complete games in 21 starts. |
As a team, the Red Sox led the league in complete games and shutouts, making up for an offense that struggled - outside of Ruth - to produce runs. Harry Hooper ranked second in the league with 13 triples and third with 81 runs, led the team with 75 walks and shared the team lead with 26 doubles. |
