After finishing 23 ½ games out of first in 1923, the Senators won the AL Pennant by two games over the New York Yankees. |
Washington battled the Giants in one of the closest World Series in history. Four games were decided by one run and two went to extra innings, including the decisive Game 7 that Washington won in 12 innings. |
Walter Johnson led the AL in wins (23), strikeouts (158), shutouts (6) and ERA (2.72). Tom Zachary (15-9, 2.75 ERA) and George Mogridge (16-11, 3.76) also helped lead a Senators staff that recorded the league's lowest ERA (3.34). |
Closer Firpo Marberry became the first relief specialist in ML history and led the league with 15 saves. |
Hall of Fame outfielder Goose Goslin topped the AL with 129 RBIs (eight more that Babe Ruth) and batted a team-high .344. Sam Rice (.334, 106 runs, 24 SBs) and Joe Judge (.324, 38 doubles) rounded out the Senator attack. |
