1929 Chicago Cubs
After winning the NL Pennant by 10 ½ games over Pittsburgh, the 1929 Cubs lost three close games and fell to the Philadelphia A's in five games in the World Series.
Three Hall of Famers were part of the Cubs' everyday starting lineup - Hack Wilson, Rogers Hornsby and Kiki Cuyler.
Hornsby batted .380 with 39 homers and 149 RBIs in his final season as an everyday player.  He would play parts of the next eight seasons with the Cubs, Cards and Browns as a player-manager, but never total more than 100 games played again in his career. In 1929 he led the Majors in runs (156) and total bases (409), and ranked among the top five in the NL in Avg, OBP, SLG, hits, doubles, homers, RBIs and walks.
Wilson set career highs in average (.345), homers (39) and RBIs (159 - tops in the Majors). He would surpass those numbers the following season when he set the all-time record with 191 RBIs to go along with 56 homers and a .356 average.
Cuyler led the NL in stolen bases (43) and batted a career-high .360 during the regular season.
The Cubs averaged a Major League-high 6.29 runs per game and batted .303 as a team. Their starting rotation of Charlie Root, Pat Malone, Sheriff Blake, Guy Bush and Hal Carlson led the league in shutouts (14). Malone topped the league in wins (22), strikeouts (166) and shutouts (5).
The Cubs were managed by Hall of Fame skipper Joe McCarthy, who would go on to capture seven World Series titles with the Yankees in the 30s and 40s. McCarthy managed 24 years in the Majors without ever having a team finish below .500.
