1930 Philadelphia Athletics
In perhaps the greatest offensive season in the history of baseball, the Philadelphia Athletics were baseball's best team, winning 102 games to take the American League Pennant before dispatching the St. Louis Cardinals in six games to win their second straight World Series.
Jimmie Foxx and Al Simmons were the dual leaders of the offense, which ranked second in the league in runs and homers, forming a terrifying one-two punch for opposing pitchers.
Simmons led the league with a .381 batting average and 152 runs, ranked second with 165 RBIs and 392 total bases and third with 211 hits and a .708 slugging percentage. He added 41 doubles and a team high 16 triples, and ranked second on the team with 36 homers.
Foxx, meanwhile, ranked third in the league with 37 homers, 156 RBIs and a .429 on-base percentage, and fourth with 93 walks, 358 total bases and a .637 slugging percentage. His 188 hits included 33 doubles and 13 triples.
Second baseman Max Bishop ranked second in the league with 128 walks and fourth with a .426 on-base percentage, while scoring 117 runs, and catcher Mickey Cochrane hit .357 with 110 runs, 85 RBIs and a .424 on-base percentage. Third baseman Jimmy Dykes posted a .414 on-base percentage, and outfielder Bing Miller drove in an even 100 runs and hit 38 doubles.
Ace starter Lefty Grove was unquestionably baseball's best pitcher. He racked up the fourth of seven straight 20-win seasons, leading the Majors with 28, and also led all of baseball with a 2.54 ERA, 209 strikeouts, 50 games and nine saves.
George Earnshaw enjoyed his second 20-win season, notching 22 wins and trailing only Grove with 193 strikeouts and 49 games, while sharing the league lead with three shutouts.
Rube Walberg added 13 wins and completed 12 games, and Bill Shores picked up 12 victories.
