The Yankees dominated the American League in the regular season with 102 wins, then overpowered the crosstown New York Giants in five games to win the second of four straight World Series titles. |
Six future Hall-of-Famers studded a roster that led the league in runs scored, walks and homers, as well as ERA and shutouts. |
Second-year outfielder Joe DiMaggio was the centerpiece of the team, with league-leading totals of 151 runs, 46 homers, 418 total bases and a .673 slugging percentage, also ranking among the leaders with 215 hits, 35 doubles, 15 triples, a .346 average and a .410 on-base percentage. |
Veteran Lou Gehrig complemented DiMaggio by leading the league with 127 walks and a .473 on-base percentage, while racking up 138 runs, 200 hits, 37 doubles, 37 homers, 159 RBIs, a .351 average and a .643 slugging percentage. |
Catcher Bill Dickey also posted a stellar season, with a .332 average, 29 homers, 133 RBIs and 73 walks against only 22 strikeouts. Third baseman Red Rolfe scored 143 runs while shortstop Frankie Crosetti crossed the plate 127 times, with 11 homers and 13 steals. |
The pitching staff was led by Lefty Gomez and Red Ruffing, who ranked 1-2 in the league with 21 and 20 wins. Gomez also led the league with a 2.33 ERA, six shutouts and 194 strikeouts, while completing 25 games. Ruffing completed 22 games and notched a 2.98 ERA. |
Reliever Johnny Murphy won 13 games out of the bullpen and Bump Hadley added 11. |
