Bangles Pop Superstars (1986-1988)
The Bangles had really hit their stride when 1986 came around. The year started off pretty normally, they were starting to get some more attention while they toured. The release of their second CBS album, Different Light had helped a bit. One song from the album garnered much attention for the girls as it spent two weeks in the number two slot on the Billboard Charts. That song was "Manic Monday" written for them by a famous fan: Prince under the pseudonym, Christopher.Once that song hit, the Bangles were flying high in 1986.The next release slightly faltered a bit on the charts, reaching number twenty-nine, that song was "If She Knew What She Wants", but the next song catapulted the Bangles to superstardom. That song was "Walk Like An Egyptian" which reached number one in December 1986 and stayed there till January 1987.Though the album was successful, the Bangles were very busy touring at the time they were working on it so only eight of the twelve songs had a Bangles songwriting credit, nonetheless, the Bangles were riding high in '87. The album went double platinum(as of 1994,triple platinum), they made talk show appearances, they were all over the print media, people loved them. Susanna Hoffs even starred in a movie. L.A. mayor Tom Bradley declared February 23rd, 1987 Bangles Day in L.A. The Bangles released another single in 1987 that went to number 11 in the USA, "Walking Down Your Street". The next single was "Following" which was only released in the UK.Then in 1988, the Bangles held the number two slot again for their track from "Less Than Zero":
The old Simon and Garfunkel song:"Hazy Shade Of Winter." Everything was going well for the Bangles in 1988, literally.
