He glides through his house, hidden by the shadows of the dark night. The only light is that of the moon, flowing in from the large windows, leaving white squares on the navy carpets. The creatures seem silent, and the only noise he hears is the clock, which ticks noisily on the wall. "Tick, tock, tick, tock, time is running short," it says to him. "Yes, I know," he says, "I know," he pauses, then begin to murmer to himself, "I have made a mistake." "An error doesn't become a mistake until you refuse to correct it," the clock says to him. "I will fix it," he mumbles. The clock only clicks it's tounge at him. His error has thrived and grown now. Too long to remain an error, he thinks to himself. "Too long, too long," the clock sings rather happily. His footsteps fall gently, softened by the carpeting. He presses his ear to his son's door. He is greeted by the soft snoring that has become familiar to him. "He is asleep! He is asleep! Don't wake him!" the clock reminds him rahter loudly. "Yes, I know," the man says. He opens the door, peering in. He sees only darkness. He calls out to his son, but the snoring continues. "Don't wake him," the clock says again. "I won't," he replies, feeling his way to the bed. His son lays there, in a dreamless sleep. He wakes, feeling his father's stare. He blinks, and rubs his eyes. "Yes?" he grumbles. The man says nothing. The boy's eyes widen, then remain still. "What's happening?" the clock inquires from the hall, hearing the scream of the boy. The man emerges from the room, wiping the spreading scarlet stain from his robe. "Nothing, nothing," he says. "Just fixing my mistake." The clock says nothing. |
