The Neoteric Dating System

The Neoteric dating system, devised by a Canadian student in 1996, is beginning to make it’s way into our lives. Within a few years, the system would likely to by used by many people, if it continues to grow at the rate it currently is. Neoteric, means modern or new, and puts a well deserved title to the recently created dating system.

To use the system, one must understand the many uses for and how to use it.

First, the system is based on descending order, with the largest unit always first, hence 99 for 1999, 00 for 2000, etc.

990000 - 1999

Then, the second pair of digits stands for the month. For example, if it is February, it would be the second month, so it would be 02, or October as the tenth month, 10.

990200 - February 1999

The third pair and frequently the last set of digits, if used for dating purposes, would be the day of the month. So if it is the seventh, it would be 07, thirty-first, 31.

990207 - February 7, 1999

With the Neoteric system, the day of the week is not used.

If the document or the report is time sensitive, add a 24 hour time system behind the date with a colon separating the two. 0000 would be the same as 2400 the day before BUT, in the Neoteric dating system, 2400 would not be correct, so to label midnight, you would label it as the new day and not the old.

991102:0526 - November 2, 1999 at 5:26 AM

991102:2400 IS WRONG!!!
991103:0000 IS CORRECT!!! - Midnight (as in morning) of November 3, 1999

Now, other uses of the system could be to label the date a document was created or updated. One more last purpose is for multiple copies of the document (usually for e-mail or chat) that are created on the same day. Time CAN be used in this case.

To label a creation, all you do is add a c. in front of the date.

c.990328 - Created March 28, 1999

To label an updated, add a u. in front of the date.

u.990624.1200 - Updated at noon on June 24, 1999

To label a chat or e-mail file using the system, place the sender in front and place a decimal after the date and number the document 1 as the first of the day and 9 as the ninth. IF there are more than ten documents, the first nine documents would be two digits as well, so instead of 1 as the first document, it would be 01. Then place a c or e at the end for chat or e-mail. TIME is NOT used in this because you cannot receive two different documents in the same time frame.

Angela 990909.7c - Seventh chat with Angela on September 9, 1999.

Matt 991003.2e - Second e-mail sent by Matt.
