Leah here - not Elaine, but I read something in a little booklet I bought from the HFS that mentions something along these lines. I've mentioned it ad nauseum on several lists, so I'm sure I've brought it up here also. What I'm about to mention is one reason why I haven't used CS up to this point, although I have faith that it can be extremely helpful:
"a concentration of 3-5 ppm ----- will be a sufficient concentration to be both effective and safe to consume on a regular, daily basis. Higher concentrations above 5 ppm, may cause *silver build-up* (build up I suppose could eventually cause problems, I would think) in the system and are *not necessarily* more effective." The booklet goes on to mention that a 500 ppm solution would yield 59 mg (59,000 mcg). Just as a reference point, under normal circumstances the average daily diet will yield approximately 50-100 mcg of silver, so these higher levels, from what I perceive from this article, should be taken with caution and for very short periods.
If I could locate a 3-5 ppm concentration of this (or probably even 10), I would gladly use this product if I needed it. My d** was sick back in December and I think this truly would have helped her get well faster. It's been used for parvo cases with d**s quite successfully and would probably work well for distemper or URIs (sorry don't remember what this is in reference to in this thread), so is very helpful for infections.
The other thing to consider is that some companies apparently add a
protein or chemical stabilizer, allowing a higher concentration of silver
with better stability. However, these stabilizers *reduce* the antimicrobial
effect of the silver.
I'll be happy to provide the reference info. for the above information
if anyone wants it.

Emily,
Thank you for the numbers associated with the 10 ppm solution! I've been wondering what the concentration is on my Nature's Sunshine brand - it only says 25 mcg per teaspoon - but using the numbers you gave: 10 ppm contains 10 mg per liter, (10mg = 10,000mcg, and 1 liter = 1000ml) so 10 ppm contains 10,000mcg per 1000ml or 10mcg per ml.
If 1 teaspoon = 5 ml, then 10 ppm contains 50mcg per teaspoon, so my NSP brand must be only 5 ppm concentration. (I swear by it tho, so 5ppm must be what *I* need).
Thanks!

<<Colloidal Silver <snip> How do you administer this?
Is it a liquid, or a pill? It sounds like it might be something

Diane ~
CS is a liquid; comes in the classic little-brown-bottle-with-a-dropper.. I use the 10 ppm dose for the kitties. The human dose is 2 tsp/day, so I just gave Django about1/3 of a dropperful each day. He's trusting enough that I can just open his mouth a bit & squirt it in, and it's pretty tasteless. It's supposed to work on killing bacterial AND viral organisms, so yes, I think it's a good thing to have handy. My experience with it is pretty limited, but I'm treating it with a little more respect since this incident. It just occurred to me that I could probably try some myself for this cold!

Diane ~ I have the Source Naturals brand, which I found at my local HFS. It's made in Scotts Valley Ca...no phone number on the bottle, though. Did you ask your HFS folks if they could order it for you?
<<I might be able to do this...but in a pinch, is this something I could mix in with their food?>>
The instructions on my bottle say it's best taken alone on an empty stomach
<<It just seems like a good remedy to have on hand...along with about a hundred others.>>
I hear ya! My mother says the cats & I should be the
healthiest folks in town w/ all the supplements in my kitchen!

You can get 10 ppm or even 3ppm at the Vitamin Shoppe, http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/

According to the experts, colloidal silver will kill everything bacterial, viral and fungal after 7-8 minutes of entering the body. I always suggest that you give a .5 ml dosage by mouth. You can add to water. You can put in the ears for ear mites/infections; in the eyes for eye problems and for new kittens; in the nose for URI's; on the umbilical cord of a newborn kitten, or topically. Just make sure that it isn't any stronger than 5-10 ppm or it can cause silver poisoning.
