<10 Aug 98 From: Leah  Re: Constipation in crf cat>

Susanne and Sanjay -

I believe Peggy might have already mentioned this, but there's a stool softener treat recipe in Anitra's book:

1 T. baby food vegetables and meat mixture
1/2 tsp. melted butter
1/8 tsp. ground psyllium husks
1/8 tsp. powdered or fine bran
2 T. or more of water ( use your judgement)

As many have mentioned, it's important when they get psyllium to get adequate water intake too.  I used the above for Simon and found it worked well.  It's not as harsh as some other types of things might be and is easier on the system of a crf kitty.

Phyllida,

If you are trying to make your "own" (better) sci-di a/d you might want to check out the web site:  http://www.allcreatures.com/recipefe.htmI believe the 4th recipe (hypoallergenic) is close to the a/d formula.

***Ed. note: the hypoallergenic recipe is NOT appropriate for a/d --  none of the recipes on that page are versions of a/d***

How would you modifiy the recipe if at all for a crf cat?  For Pitcairn's kidney recipe I got out the old Betty Crocker cookbook and 1 1/3 cu (2/3 lbs.) meat is = 21 tablespoons and his recipe is good for 5-6 days of meals.  So I quess you could use approx. 4 tbsp.  per one day serving.

I was going thru his recipes again last nite becaue I can see that Princess Puff (just kidding, she's my baby) is starting to get a more discriminating taste.  Last month when fresh food was new to her, the chicken boiled in water was a treat, now it no longer holds her interest.  I can see she loves liver and that the meats now have to have strong smells.  Also I have been using the boneless skinless chicken breast and I can see you need thighs for the smell and probably like Frazier suggests, the chicken is more enticing to them if it's broiled or baked.

<<I'm new to the list and keep adding cats and kittens to my household. >>

Hi Cheri!

<<Is there a good well balanced regiment for the food I can follow? I've  developed my own and it does seem to help but I'm always interested in  new  ideas. >>

I'm really not familiar with feeding cats under the age of 5-6 months. I feed my cats something consisting of approximately 65% muscle meat, 20% organ meat, and 15% veggies as the basic daily menu. I grind whole chickens/rabbits (I saw some guinea hens at Whole Foods that I'm going to try out next) so I don't add bonemeal, but if you're using cuts of meat or pre-ground meat, add 1-2 tablespoons of boneeal.

They also get 1/2 a whole quail 2-3 times a week in place of dinner, and chicken neck pieces a few times a week, depending on how much quail I'm feeding.

What are you feeding now?

<21 Sep 1998 From: Leah Re: Steak & Kidney Pie for Cats>

Sandy and listers -

I'm posting the recipe, but I can tell 'ya the "no grains" people will not like this recipe, especially in proportion to the meat (and you'll barely be able to see the vegetables).  Here goes:

1/2 cup organic ground beef kidney
1/2 cup organic ground chuck
1/2 cup well-cooked brown rice (cook with chicken broth)
1 T. finely grated raw carrot (or carrot powder)
1 tsp. finely chopped wheat grass or sprouts
1 heaping teaspoon bonemeal
1/8 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 teas. blue green algae (optional)

Mix meat and bonemeal together with approximately 1/4 cup of water (to a chili consistency).  In a separate bowl mix rice, carrot, greens, and seasonings together with enough water to make a smooth consistency.  Mix vegetable/grain mixture with meat and place meal size portions on plates. Add supplement of choice and serve.

It does emphasize that the meats should be organic if at all possible.
