Holland-Hayward Family

John Hayward's notes on the:

History of the Hayward family of Peasenhall, Suffolk, UK

The following efforts at unscrambling the ancestry of our branch of the Hayward family, in a 'note format', rather than as text, are the greatly appreciated work of John V. Hayward of Saxmundham, conducted during the 1990s. They form the basis for the analyses and suppositions on the webpage linked hereto. To reduce the length of that page, the two have been split accordingly.

I have the LDS 1881 census on CDs which has helped me a lot. In the census Marie Hayward was living in the Street, Peasenhall, she was a widow aged 70, born in Sweffling (i.e. in 1811 when many of my family were being born in Sweffling). Marie was head of the household and her occupation was a nurse (SMS). In occupation at the same time was Sarah Barnsby, a lodger, also a widow aged 76 and born in Sweffling. (Perhaps a sister). There was also a Marie Stead, married aged 46 and born in Sibton. (A daughter perhaps). I know I have seen Marie's name in previous censuses, I'll check again.

In 1881 Gertrude Hayward was a household domestic servant, unmarried, aged 21, living at 9 Windsor Road, Ealing, Middlesex. Gertrude was born in Peasenhall. At 9 Windsor Road as well were Margaret Rutherford, who was the head of the household, a widow aged 65, born at Doddington, Kent. Two sons of Margaret, Charles James Stuart Rutherford, unmarried, aged 35 and born in Calcutta Bengal, and Henry Armand Rutherford, a commercial clerk in a gelatine manufactures office. he was unmarried, aged 29 and born in Cape Town, South Africa. At the house also was a Harriot Payne, a cook in domestic service, unmarried aged 24, born at Ho....ton Bridge, Middlesex.

John's (abridged) letter to me of 4 September 1999:

Dear Val,

I spent all day at the SRO on Tuesday as I said I would. I found the following and it is just as I found it for your. The italics are the source document references.

16th December 1832,  Samuel, son of Samuel Howard, Labourer and Maria, late Baxter

I have recorded all the Haywards and similar from the Framlingham Parish Registers, these have been transcribed in full by others. Within these I have found the following, the page No. refers to the page number in the original transcriptions, they are now also on microfilm.

BANNS ex FRAMLINGHAM

Hayward(B), George, 1785, 25th September, 2nd, 9th October, Wm. Brown, Curate. & Pollard (Sp), Elizabeth From page 15.

Unfortunately the abodes of these two is not given, possibly it can be assumed they were both from Framlingham. However I suspect Elizabeth came from somewhere else and that is where they were married, since there is no marriage record in Framlingham for them.

BAPTISMS ex FRAMLINGHAM

Hayward, Hannah, daughter of George and Elizabeth late Pollard(Sp), baptised 14th September 1786, born 17th August 1786. Page 108

Hayward, Samuel, son of George and Elizabeth late Pollard(Sp), baptised 5th April 1789. Page 115. This, I assume, is the Samuel who is aged 84 in the 1871 Peasenhall census above

Hayward, Matilda, daughter Of George and Elizabeth Hayward, baptised 5th November 1792. Page 126 Presumably this Matilda died young, at least before 1803

Howard, James, son of George Howard and Elizabeth late Pollard(Sp) baptised 14th October 1794. Page 131

Hayward, Matilda, daughter of George Hayward and Elizabeth late Pollard baptised 2nd January 1803 Page 160

Heyward, George, son of John and Sarah Heyward, baptised 4th March 1763. Page 67. This is the only George baptism recorded in Framlingham around the time George - of George and Elizabeth - may have been born.

From the 1881 Census that I have on CDs the following are in Rendham Road, Peasenhall

Samuel Hayward, Head, Carpenter, Married, aged 48, born Sibton, Suffolk

Emily I Hayward, Daughter, Housekeeper, Unmarried, 18, born Peasenhall, Suffolk.

Florence E Hayward , Daughter, Pupil School Teacher, unmarried, 17, born Peasenhall, Suffolk

Maria J C Hayward, Daughter, Scholar, 14, born Dieppe, France

Frederick S J Hayward, Son Scholar 12, born Dieppe (B), France

Herbert W Hayward Son, Scholar 10, born Dieppe, France

James Rowe Father -in-Law, Retired Farm Labourer, 75, born Walpole, Suffolk

John's Notes on the above:

Herbert above must be the same Herbert staying with Samuel and Maria Hayward 1871.

Naomi would appear to be dead if Emily was acting as Housekeeper, it must be assumed that James Rowe is Naomi’s father.

This then begs the question, where were Emily, Florence, Maria and Frederick for the 1871 Census? We know Herbert was with his Grandparents. And where was Gertrude, they may all have been in Walpole with their Grandfather James Rowe.

It must be assumed that this Samuel worked in Dieppe, France, for James Smyth. In the 1871 census my relation Charles Hayward, aged 46, was a “Smith’s Foreman at Corn Drill Factory”, also James Smyth.

Again from the 1881 census Agatha Hayward was a Nursemaid to Horace and Mary Frere’s children. Horace was from Yarmouth, Norfolk and Mary form Norwich, Norfolk. They were living at Queens Road, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey. The census says Agatha was unmarried, aged 23 and born at Plasenhall, Suffolk.

As I’ve said before Maria Hayward, aged 70, was a Nurse (SMS) and living in "The Street", Peasenhall for the 1881 Census, it says she was born in Sweffling.

The CDs of the 1881 census cost £29.75 in the UK and are well worth the price, I understand the LDS are now putting the 1851 Census on CDs and that the 1901 Census will be on a web site in January 2002. The National Index for Births, Marriages and Deaths is also being prepared for a web site. If only the 1841, 1861, 1871 and 1891 censuses were on CDs.
