How to Sew Strip Pieced Fabric Making strip pieced fabric for a quilt lets you make a very simple quilt look great, and uses up leftover fabrics, too. Here's How: Choose an assortment of quilt quality fabrics and put them on a large table. Play with arranging and overlapping the fabrics to find an order that pleases you. Group by color family, contrast, or light-to-dark, experiment freely. If you are making a rail fence quilt you will only need 3 colors. Cut strips from each fabric of desired width. Strip widths can be anything from an inch to 3 inches, they can all be the same or vary the widths. Pin the strips together side by side, then sew them together. If you don't have a sewing machine and you are doing this by hand, you will want to make a knot in each place you will be cutting so that your thread does not come out. (example: if you are making a 6" block start sewing, then after 6" make a knot, cut your thread, knot again and continue sewing. Do this every 6 inches. Then when you are ready to cut make sure you do not cut on the knot, cut just beside it.) |
