~ In Memoriam ~

~ Although her film career was brief, it was bright and and wonderfully entertaining. Thank you Nancy Carroll! ~
~ In Loving Memory of Nancy Carroll ~

August 6, 1965 ~ August 6, 2008

Forty three years ago Nancy Carroll left this world. She may be gone, but she is far from forgotten. Nancy will always be remembered. She holds the distinction of being the first * star * created by the talkies -- a talented fiery redhead with one of the most enchanting faces to ever have graced the stage, movie and television screens. Nancy continues to live on through her films, in film history books and in the beautiful series of photographs taken of her over the years, and of course, through this website. But most of all, for those who knew and loved Nancy, she'll live on in their hearts forever. Rest in sweet gentle peace Ann Veronica Lahiff.

Nancy's final resting place is in Calvary Cemetery in Woodside (Queens) New York. To date, I have not visited her grave, but here is the information. Also, a fan has placed a memorial at Find A Grave where you may leave cyberflowers and a message for Nancy.

I recently obtained a copy of Scott Wilson's RESTING PLACES The Burial Sites of Over 7,000 Famous Persons;2001 McFarland & Co. Inc. Publishing.

Nancy Carroll is entry # 1047 in Wilson's book and what appears below is verbatim:

" 1047 Carroll, Nancy ( Anna LaHiff November 19, 1903 - August 6, 1965) Actress in films of the late '20s and '30s, the daughter of an immigrant from County Clare, Ireland where she spent much time in later years. She died unexpectedly at 60 (or 61) in Manhattan. Service at The Abbey. Burial in the Lahiff lot as Nancy Carroll ( each lot having one stone listing the names) Sec. 35, lot 2, range 10, grave 14/15 (3rd), Calvary Woodside Queens, NYC. "
