Rob kidnaps Lucy - September 1999
When Rob kidnapped Lucy it was one of the most far-fetched, unbelievable episodes Hollyoaks had ever done. However it was also one of the most memorable episodes due to the nature of events that took place.
In this episode Rob returned from the Atlantic Ocean where he was last seen in Off On One after a fight with Kurt.
(See Classic Episodes Off On One for more information.)
Rob kidnapped Lucy after Kurt's funeral and took her to a nautical test centre where he planned to drown her in a water tank. Here Rob told Lucy that he had killed Kurt and this was his bid for revenge on her.
However Lewis, Ruth and Tony went after Lucy when they realised she was missing to try and save her but as they reached the tower Rob also trapped them in the water tank. They were then plunged into the water with no hope of escape.
As Ruth, Lewis, Tony and Lucy were trapped in the tank Rob stood in the control box and altered the temperature of the water and added wave effects stating this was his payback for what they had done to him.
At this point Lucy started to get hypothermia, which caused Tony to reveal his true feelings for her. As time went on it looked like Rob had finally won in his quest for revenge but due to Tony's bravery they managed to escape. Tony used his air canister to swim to the bottom of the tank and here he found an escape hatch and he managed to get it open.
As Robbie Williams' Angels played Ruth, Lewis, Tony and Lucy were pulled through the hole and ended up washed up in the River Dee. As they swam to safety Tony realised Lucy hadn't made it. She had stopped breathing and was floating in the river. Tony swam to her and pulled her onto the riverbank and then gave her the kiss of life and Lucy pulled through.
So whilst the water tank story was completely far fetched the episodes proved to be very popular pulling in millions of viewers and going down in history as yet another memorable moment.
