Plot Summary:

United States rockets are being misguided by an unknown entity that is using a power radio beam to redirect the spacecraft. The US CIA believes that the entity responsible for this rocket "toppling" is located somewhere in the Carribean, near Jamaica. The head of British intelligence in Jamaica (Commander John Strangways) investigates on behalf of the US and is assassinated when he discovers who is behind the plot to interfere with the US rockets. Agent 007 is ordered to investigate both Strangways' murder as well as the toppling of the US rockets.

Facts about Dr. No

Technically, Sean Connery is not the first man to portray agent 007 on the silver screen. Connery's stunt double and action-arranger Bob Simmons portrays James Bond in the gun-barrel sequence used to open Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger.

Ian Fleming often used real-life acquaintances as inspiration for characters in his novels. One such example is "Q". Fleming was known to get advice on weapons from a man named Boothroyd, who was an expert in the field of firearms and other weaponry.

In the original draft of the screenplay, Dr. No was a monkey!

The character of "Honey Ryder" was named "Honeychile Rider" in Fleming's original novel. The film producers felt that the vague sexual connotation of the character's name was too controversial to use and it was shortened.

Ursula Andress was offered the role of Honey Ryder when "Cubby" Broccoli saw a picture of Andress in a wet T-shirt.

Ian Fleming's preference for the role of Doctor No was his cousin, Christopher Lee. Lee would go on to play Francisco Scaramanga in The Man With The Golden Gun.

Prior to the distribution of Dr. No, higher-ups at United Artists were nervously quoted as saying "All we can lose is $1 million!" The film grossed sixty times that amount.
