Beasts, 1972, Direct Video, Directed by Eddie Romero, Starring John Ashley, Pat Woodel, Jan Merlin, Charles Macaulay, Pam Grier.

Once again director Romero and former teen film star Ashley have joined forces to bore the audience silly. The two act as co- producers this time, leaving no doubt as to where to lay the blame for this rip off of H.G. Wells' Island of Dr. Moreau.

Ashley's character Matt Farrell is captured by mad scientist Dr. Gordon. Farrell is to be a guinea pig in "The single most important scientific event in the history of life on this planet." Dr. Gordon is attempting to create a super being by crossing humans with various animals. Aided by Gordon's daughter Nayva, Farrell releases Gordon's experiments including an antelope man, a wolf woman, a bat man, and a panther woman (exploitation vet Pam Grier is wasted in this non-speaking role). A large chunk of the film is spent on a tedious jungle chase, the highlight of which is the bat man taking to the air (how they fit that into the obviously minuscule budget is beyond me).

This Filipino snooze-fest has also been known as The Twilight People and Island of the Twilight People. A new video generated title has been inserted, but the rest of the opening credits appear to be intact. Nearly every reference book that mentions this flick tells how gory it is, but there's almost no blood to be found here. This fact, combined with the frequent jump cuts, lead me to believe this is a TV print.

The makeup effects are uninspired, the lighting is too dark, and the acting is just barely at the professional level. Watching a test pattern would be preferable.
