Grampa's Sci-Fi Hits,1988, Amvest Video

For me, trailer compilations are a pretty safe buy. Sure there are always a few turkeys in the flock, but there's usually something worthy of a purchase price. Also, let's face it, a lot of the films in this genre are far more watchable as two or three minute trailers than at their full running time.

This one's got plenty of good stuff, including The Omega Man (a personal favorite), Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers, Village of the Giants, and a slew of Godzilla movies. I could, however, do without the annoying narration from Al Lewis, a.k.a. Grampa Munster. I'm happy to report that he's looking well for his age, but his insipid dialogue (including an uncharacteristically tasteless Jane Fonda joke) really detract from an otherwise fine video offering.

The box cover lists ten films that are not on the tape. All ten have been replaced by other trailers, so the buyer gets the full twenty-eight previews promised on the box, but since this tape was made in 1988 one would think there has been sufficient time to redesign the package. Some of the replacements are probably just as good, but I was looking forward to scenes from Attack of the Crab Monsters, and The Black Scorpion.
